Montreal Canadiens

John Ambrose O'Brien formed this hockey team in 1909, and called it the Club de Hockey Canadien which is where the current incarnation gets the Canadien nickname. Any real hockey fan also knows that the team is affectionately referred to as "The Habs", or "Les Habs" if you're a true French Canadian. This is an abbreviation of "Les Habitants", a name for the early Canadian settlers of New France in the 1600s.
