The Buffalo hockey team was originally going to be known as the Bisons, but then decided to have a name-the-team contest in order to acquire a more original and unique name for the franchise. Many ideas were submitted, but Sabres won out. Ownership claimed they liked Sabres in that as a weapon it is strong in both offense and defense, as they hoped their hockey team would be.
