New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints franchise was officially approved at a NFL meeting on November 1, 1966, which happens to be All Saints Day. This alone didn't name the New Orleans franchise. The Saints nickname was also one of the favorites submitted in a "name-the-team" contest held by New Orleans States-Item newspaper.

Ultimately team owner John Mecom chose the moniker Saints to honor the city's rich jazz heritage, and from the popular tune "When the Saints Go Marching In" which to this day is still the team's fight song.
