Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars are another city that benefited off of Los Angeles not having their ducks in a row to receive a shiny new football franchise, and remained at the time the second largest market in the United States that somehow had zero football teams. Before getting their new expansion team, Jacksonville was in discussion as the destination of the Baltimore Colts before they fled to Indianapolis, and the moving spot for the Houston Oilers before they fled to Tennessee.

The NFL planned to award two new expansion franchises in 1993 and had first selected Charlotte for one of the teams. Jacksonville beat out St. Louis, Baltimore, and Memphis as the location of the second expansion team. Yet another "name-the-team" contest was held to give fans a chance to name their new football club. Jaguars was selected, and though there are no Jaguars roaming around the city limits of Jacksonville, the oldest living Jaguar in the United States was living at the Jacksonville Zoo at the time. Also I think Jacksonville Jaguars sounds good and I'm sure that had to have something to do with it. Who's not a fan of alliteration? Probably communists. And the NFL doesn't care for communists.
