The new Pittsburgh hockey franchise was slated to play in the civic arena commonly referred to as the Big Igloo, so people already had ice on their minds when they took part in a name-the-team contest for the club. Over 700 of the entries suggested Penguins partly because of the alliteration and partly because the igloo-penguin connection.
