Once Portland was granted an expansion basketball team in 1970, they of course needed a name. And where do most team's get their name? Do they come up with something themselves? Heck No! And so like most others they held a name-the-team contest for their new moniker.

The winning name by a landslide margin was Pioneers, but that was already in use as a nickname of a local college, so they decided to go with the runner-up name in the Trailblazers.
