Minnesota Timberwolves

The Minneapolis Lakers fled for LA back in 1960 and just under 30 years later Minnesota was awarded another NBA franchise in 1989. Thirty years is a long time to think up a new name, but of course a name-the-team contest was held to decided the team's moniker.

Many names were suggested, including Blizzards, but the final vote came down to either the Polars or the Timberwolves. City council leaders around the state voted 2-1 in favor of the Timberwolves due to the name's uniqueness to the state. Minnesota is the only state in the lower 48 states which has free roaming packs of timber wolves.
