The Pacers started out their history as an ABA team back in 1967 before being added to the NBA in 1976. The team's original
group of investors decided upon the Pacers moniker that we now associate with Indiana.
The name was decided on for two reasons. The first having to do with Indiana's involvement in harness racing pacers, and the
other a nod to auto racing, specifically the pace car of the storied Indianapolis 500. So yeah, they are kind of named after a pace car.
