Brooklyn Nets

This team began as the New Jersey Americans as one of the first teams that made up the ABA in 1967. Hard to blame them, but they moved to New York after their first year, and traded in the Americans moniker for Nets as they are known today.

No real reason to think they weren't named after a basketball net, and there might be something to the fact that Nets rhymes with two other New York teams - Mets and Jets. The Nets relocated back to New Jersey in 1977 and moved to Brooklyn in 2012 where they play today.
