San Antonio's basketball squad was originally the Dallas Chaparrals which was an ABA team that was purchased and moved to San Antonio in 1973. The new ownership group decided to call them the San Antonio Gunslingers, but they never played a game with that name.

Perhaps someone wasn't sure about the Gunslingers, so they held a name-the-team contest to get some feedback from the San Antonio fans. This resulted in Spurs as the team's name which they have been ever since.
