The Warriors began their history as the Philadelphia Warriors in 1946 back in the American Basketball League. They chose to keep the Warriors nickname when the team was moved to San Francisco in 1962.

After the Warriors crossed the bay to Oakland in 1971, they again kept Warriors as their nickname but changed their full identity to the Golden State Warriors in an effort to expand their appeal to the whole state of California.
