A name the team contest picked Blades for the new San Jose hockey team, but the name was scrapped due to gang connotations. So they went to the runner-up option that was Sharks. This moniker makes sense for the area as there are seven different shark species that call the Bay Area waters home in what is known as the Red Triangle.
