Eastern Conference
How hockey teams got their nicknames.
Eastern Conference Teams
The Eastern Conference used to be the Prince of Wales Conference and was originally created in 1974 when the NHL realigned teams
into four divisions within the similar two conferences we have today. The conference name was shortened to be simply the
Wales Conference in 1981 during another realignment, and again in 1993 the conference changed to the Eastern Conference which
we have today. The Atlantic and Metropolitan divisions make up the Eastern Conference.
