Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames sounds like a team named by fans via a name-the-team contest, but this franchise got its start as the Atlanta Flames back in 1972. The moniker was a reference to the burning of Atlanta by General Sherman in the Civil War, and remained when they moved to Calgary as it also works as a nickname of a team in an oil region.
