Houston Texans

At one time Houston had the Oilers, but that team fled to Tennessee in 1997 leaving a football void until 2002 when Houston's new expansion team took the field. The smart money at the time would have been betting on a new expansion team going to Los Angeles, where the second largest market in the United States had no professional football team to call their own, but smart money often doesn't bring home the bacon.

With Los Angeles failing to come up with a plan to build a stadium for a shiny new team in La-La Land, Houston swooped in with a solid deal, and was unanimously approved and awarded the newest NFL team. Months of focus groups rustled up five nicknames as finalists - Bobcats, Stallions, Wildcatters, Apollos, and Texans. McNair chose Texans over the other options, making Houston the sixth professional football team to use that nickname.
