When the expansion franchise in Phoenix was created in 1968 the team apparently followed Team Naming 101 protocol, and promptly held a name-the-team contest. Almost 30,000 ideas were submitted, including some that didn't make the cut that included Rattlers, Thunderbirds, and Scorpions.

The Phoenix General Manager, Jerry Colangelo, who was a young buck at 28 years young, decided to go with Suns as the team's moniker.
