The Seattle SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008, and ownership decided to change the team's nickname instead of maintain one that would have no regional relevancy whatsoever (e.g. Lakers, Jazz). A fan vote was held allowing fans to vote on their favorite out of a list of predefined finalists.

Out of 64 possibilities which included Wind, Marshalls, Energy and Bison, the fans voted overwhelmingly for Thunder to reflect the stormy weather the region gets. Makes sense as they do get a lot of Thunderstorms, could have gone with Twisters as well but really I'm just glad they didn't keep the name SuperSonics (e.g. Lakers, Jazz).
