Cleveland Cavaliers

A name-the-team contest was held to give Cleveland's new basketball franchise a name in 1970. As always there were the also-rans: Foresters, Jays, Towers and Presidents. Cavaliers was the victor, and has been the team's name from day one.

Why, you ask, did they go with Cavaliers? The gentleman who won the contest, Jerry Tomko, stated "Cavaliers represent a group of daring fearless men, whose life pact was never surrender, no matter what the odds." Although in reality you'll just be another footnote in the novel that is descriptively titled Why God Hates Cleveland.
