Kansas City Royals

Kansas City was awarded a MLB franchise in 1969, and in what was common practice at the time, held a name-the-team contest to come up with something to call the new baseball club. Kansas City had different major league teams in the late 1800s, all named the Cowboys to reflect the area's cattle culture.

Over 17,000 entries were submitted to the name-the-team contest, and Royals was selected from the bunch. This was not because Kansas City was ruled by a monarchy at the time, but rather to reflect the region's belief that they had the best livestock and cattle in the country. In this case Royals stood for the best of the best cows and horses.
