Colorado Rockies

Team owners went with the Rockies in 1989 when the area was granted an expansion team. The name not only was a reference to the majestic Rocky Mountains of the region, but was also used by the horribly unsuccessful NHL hockey team that played in Denver from 1976 - 1982.

Many locals rejected the use of a bad hockey team's nickname, but team owners stood by their decision to bring the moniker back to a professional sports team in the area. Rockies CEO John Antonucci at the time said "We feel very strongly that Colorado Rockies might be one of the strongest names in all of professional sports."
